A multi-million pound initiative that is digitising, connecting and applying artificial intelligence to NHS pathology services in the North of England has taken an important step, after Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust became the first of an initial six trusts in the Northern Pathology Imaging Co-operative (NPIC) to deploy a technology that will underpin the regional programme.

GPs and patients are to benefit from a new softphone app that will eliminate almost all the "hidden cost" of calls for remote consultations and is forecast to save the NHS as much as £20 million over three years.

The app will mean patient calls to their GP are free and in turn reduce the cost to GPs and practices for outgoing calls by around 75%.

Berkshire and Surrey Pathology Services has been given the go-ahead to run one of the new NHS lighthouse laboratories. It will form part of NHS Test and Trace, joining Britain's largest network of diagnostic testing facilities increasing coronavirus testing capacity by tens of thousands.

The new laboratory at Bracknell Healthspace, Brants Bridge, will use the CliniSys WinPath Enterprise laboratory information system to efficiently manage up to 40,000 tests per day when running at full capacity.
