To make the EU the place where AI excellence thrives from the lab to the market, the European Union is setting up world-class Testing and Experimentation Facilities (TEFs) for AI.

Together with Member States, the Commission is co-funding the TEFs to support AI developers to bring trustworthy AI to the market more efficiently, and facilitate its uptake in Europe.

Texas Biomed will help map the developing brain with unprecedented detail for the National Institutes of Health’s BRAIN Initiative Cell Atlas Network (BICAN). NIH recently awarded a total of $500 million to 11 teams that will work together to build a 3D brain atlas at single cell resolution over the next five years.

The European Commission has financed a consortium to develop the next phase of Europe's strategically important artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure known as the AI-on-demand (AIOD) platform.

Through the Horizon Europe Programme (Artificial Intelligence and Robotics), the AI4Europe project, led by Irish University College Cork (UCC) has been awarded €9 million to develop the platform.

With the help of speech tests, an initial diagnosis of severe neurodegenerative diseases should be possible in the future. Researchers at the DZNE are developing so-called digital biomarkers for this purpose - these are criteria that an artificial intelligence can use to detect whether a patient's speech pattern has changed as a result of a disease. The technology manages to detect even slightest speech changes that are inaudible to the human ear.

A research consortium led by the UMC Utrecht Brain Center (the Netherlands) in collaboration with Graz University of Technology (Austria), the Wyss Center for Bio and Neuroengineering (Switzerland) and CorTec (Germany) is to receive a grant through the European Innovation Council (EIC) Pathfinder Challenge mechanism.

The researchers aim to develop a unique fully implantable Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) system for people with locked-in syndrome (LIS) - a condition in which paralysis severely limits communication.

A new research programme has been announced that will see researchers collaborate with industry and policymakers to tackle some of the of the biggest ethical questions posed by Artificial Intelligence (AI), in order to build public trust and ensure the UK remains at global forefront of the research, development and deployment of AI technology.

Today, the Commission opened the second set of calls for proposals of the Digital Europe Programme, which follows the adoption of the work programmes and a first set of calls in November 2021.

The calls are open to businesses, organisations, and public administrations from the EU Member States, EFTA/EEA countries, as well as entities from other countries associated to the Programme.
